Skubal's Rapid Progression Offers Hope After Elbow Surgery
Less than two weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on May 6 to remove loose bodies from his left elbow, Skubal has already progressed from playing catch to throwing a bullpen session at Comerica Park. The Tigers transferred his rehab from their spring training complex in Lakeland, Fla., to Detroit on Monday, allowing him to work more closely with pitching coach Chris Fetter as he continues his throwing progression. Manager A.J. Hinch has been careful not to attach a firm timetable to Skubal's return, and for good reason. The Tigers are not going to rush the two-time defending AL Cy Young Award winner, especially with his injury history and free agency looming after the season.

Manager A.J. Hinch said of the injured players returning, "Obviously, Tarik is a huge presence. Gleyber is a huge presence. We miss Javy, I'd love to see him this week if his rehab schedule allows. Having Carp back matters. Just that feel of having familiar faces around, guys we expected to be integral parts of our success."

After a few rough outings at the end of April, reliever Jansen has now strung together four straight scoreless appearances with eight strikeouts to begin May. Jansen appears to be re-establishing himself as a reliable endgame option in Detroit.

Will Vest returns to take Ty Madden's roster spot, who was placed on the 15-day IL due to a right forearm contusion. Vest returning now gives the Tigers hope they can crawl out of this brutal stretch they're in.
