Tigers Blank Astros Behind Dominant Montero Performance
The Tigers scored eight times off Spencer Arrighetti in the second and third innings, with Kerry Carpenter hitting a two-run homer (his 11th), James Outman hitting a three-run shot (his second), and Colt Keith belting one off the foul pole in right (his fifth). Kevin McGonigle provided additional offensive contributions with a single, two walks, two stolen bases and two runs. Montero, a rock in the Tigers' rotation, didn't allow a runner in scoring position until the sixth inning and effectively kept the Astros off the barrel, getting nine ground-ball outs including two double-plays. Manager AJ Hinch highlighted the emotional significance, saying "I can't talk about tonight without talking about our two Venezuelan pitchers who went out and pitched with heavy hearts and both stepped up for our team."
