McGonigle Earns AL Rookie of the Month Honors
Kevin McGonigle is named AL Rookie of the Month after an impressive start to his 2026 season with the Tigers. The young infielder's achievement comes as the Tigers seek to regroup following Monday's gut-wrenching loss to Boston and the indefinite loss of ace Tarik Skubal, who is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery to address loose bodies in his left elbow.
Around the Club
- Injuries — Verlander maxed out at 94 miles per hour with his fastball during the throwing session and seemingly checked out well following the workout, which potentially sets him up to face hitters later on this week. Brieske (adductor) faced live hitters Friday for the second time during his throwing program, and after suffering a left adductor strain during spring training, he was placed on the 60-day injured list prior to Opening Day and won't be eligible to make his season debut for Detroit until late May.
- Day-to-Day — Manager A.J. Hinch was hopeful that Torres may be able to pinch hit late in Monday's matchup, but noted after the game that the 29-year-old wasn't feeling healthy enough for an at-bat. Given this information, it's unlikely that Torres will be back in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game.
Quick Hits
- Boston will have Moran make his first MLB start, but he has a 4.52 ERA as a reliever since 2023. He's not expected to be on the mound long.
- Valdez has been solid in his first year in Detroit, but his ERA in night starts (4.13) is nearly three times that in day games (1.50).
